I didn't Shoot the Duck

In my Front Yard

June 19, 2008

Write and publish my family stories: One hot summer afternoon Bigmama-our Aunt and Papa-our Uncle went to town to do some grocery shopping and to pay a few bills, leaving us with Grandma Rosie who was our Daddy's Mom & Bigmama's Mom. We didn't call them Aunt & Uncle, because their Grandchildren who were our age, was always around us calling them Bigmama or Papa. Out of the six siblings, I am the eldest. I was 12, John 11, Terry 9, Leona 8, Jimmie 6 and Larry 3. Bigmama destictively gave instructions for me to make sure everyone stayed in our yard while playing, and not to have any company. I partially obeyed, but could not resist a good ole baseball game when our friends came by & suggested it. Grandma was sat on the front porch just as a figure of authority, however she never said anything nor moved from her chair while watching her active, and youngest set of Grandchildren. We were well into the second half of our game when I noticed a bebe gun laying on the ground beside Ray McKenzie's bike. My curiousity got the best of me, one touch couldn't hurt anything. Pick it up, click the trigger, check the gun out and lay the thing down. However it didn't play out like that. I pointed the gun at John while he was on second base and clicked the trigger-He let out a scream that could have curdled milk and was jumping like you could never imagine! No one new what was wrong with him except me. With tears flying from my eyes and trimbling in my voice I tried to console my younger brother with I'm sorry, I'm sorry, let me see where you're hurt. His eye looked as if the bebe was lodged beneath the lower lid, but after further investigation, we found only the bruise of it. During this entire episode Grandma never moved from the porch, but as we passed her to get inside to the firstaide kit, she stopped us to see John's eye, then exhaled and kinda pushed us in side.
