Life in a Large Family
February 1, 2008
Being the 8th child in a large Irish, catholic family was chaotic, disorganized and fraught with emotional baggage. The boys were encouraged to go to school and make something of themselves like financially solvent. The girls were encouraged to be good at housekeeping for eventual marriage. Girls were never seen as anything other than a good (obedient) mate to the bread winning man in the family. Even at a young age, I realized that was a total crock and I strived for a better outcome for my future.
